Jon Albert ’80 is Helping Families JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • WINTER 2016-17 21 on Albert ’80 was honored by the Tampa Bay Lightning as a Community Hero at the Nov. 3 Lightning-Bruins game at Amalie Arena. Albert received $50,000 from the Lightning to go toward his charitable foundation, the Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation (JAJF). JAJF was founded when Albert’s wife Jill was fi ghting Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, and the Alberts saw the impact it had on the entire family. JAJF is “treating the families, not the cancer.” It was established because “these children who are facing the imminent loss of their moms and/or dads deserve a timeout from cancer to create cherished, lasting (indispensable) memories as a family…while they can.” Albert has been honored by many prestigious organizations in addition to the Lightning, including being named Humanitarian of the Year by American Airlines, and he has been recognized on the TODAY Show and CBS Sunday Morning, among many national media outlets. Numerous former classmates at Jesuit joined Albert at Amelie Arena on Thursday, including Harold Astorquiza ’80 and John Few ’80. It was an exciting evening, as Albert received a tour of the Lightning facilities, including the locker room and bench area during pregame warmups; was presented with the $50,000 check by Lightning player Brian Boyle; was honored during a timeout in the fi rst period and given a standing ovation from the capacity crowd; and was interviewed live on the TV broadcast between the 2nd-3rd periods while wearing his new, custommade Lightning jersey. The following morning, on Nov. 4, Albert spoke at Convocation at Jesuit. He emphasized the importance in life of the three Ps – passion, perseverance, and patience – and of the three Cs – commitment, creativity, and confi dence. Several Jesuit alumni have received the Community Hero honor from the Lightning since the program was instituted when Jeff Vinik purchased the team in 2011, including Zack Aldridge ’14 (who was a student at Jesuit when he earned the honor), Andre Kirwan ’92, and Richard Gonzmart ’71.
