“Anyway, they’re trapped in the Rose and we need to get them out,” Jay
says.
“I agree,” says Nate. “But how do you plan on getting them out of there?
Howard can’t run and there’s a lot of those things hanging out down front
like it’s some Zombie Pirate Fest or something.”
“Why don’t we go through the fence behind the Rose from Izlar?” Becky
asks.
“Won’t that put us in a corner? If the geeks follow us through the fence
there’s no way out,” says Jay.
“We could always go through the front door. Shoot our way through the
crowd of zombies,” Nate says.
“Shoot your way through with what?” Brian asks suspiciously.
“What do you think we were doing last night? Making a cake at my
house? We went to get supplies,” Nate says as Tony shakes his head in
disappointment at the comment.
“Really now? What did you get?”
“A couple 9mm’s, some ammo, and a little food we had at the house,”
Tony answers for Nate. “We were planning on getting more than that, but
those things noticed us and we had to bolt.”
“Jay’s right,” Nathan says. “We have to get them out of there. I really
think if we move quickly we can do it. More than two people going would be
a bad idea. They seem to be attracted to movement or smell or something.”
“Okay, I’ll go,” Brian says. “Give me one of those guns.”
“Hold it there Tonto,” Tony replies. “We risked our lives to get what we
could and we’re not just going to hand over what we worked for.”
“Give me Becky’s gun. She doesn’t know how to use it.”
“Becky, clear and load your gun so Brian can see that you do, in fact,
know how to use it.” Becky unholsters her 9mm, releases the magazine,
locks the slide to the rear, looks to see the chamber is clear, slams the
magazine back home, and releases the slide.
“Locked and loaded bitch!” exclaims Becky.
“Great, that doesn’t mean she can shoot,” Brian says and throws an
empty vodka bottle toward the top of the dune. “Bet you a dollar she can’t
hit that!”
“Yup, that’s smart Brian. It’s the zombie apocalypse and you want to
waste ammo on a freaking vodka bottle,” Tony retorts.
“Stop it y’all!” Jay interjects. “We need to figure out what we’re going to
do about Howard and Rudy. I don’t know how long that front window can
last if those things start pounding their fists into it.”
“Jay’s right,” says Carrie. “We need to figure this out in a hurry.”
The groups bicker back and forth for a while before a plan is finally
decided on. Tony, Jay, and Carrie are going on the rescue mission. Carrie
will drive the boat and Tony and Jay will make the assault on the Wind
Rose. The tide won’t be right for this trip until around 5pm, so Becky, Nate,
and Tony head back to their camp to rest before tonight’s mission.
“I see what you’re saying about Brian. He’s a bit out of control,” says
Nate.
“Yeah,” says Tony. “So, when Jay, Carrie, and I head over tonight, you
and Becky need to make sure Brian doesn’t find our stash, and do not allow
him to even hold any of the guns even for a moment.”
“Where did you hide the stash?” asks Becky.
“Look at the wood line over there. Do you see the Siamese palm tree?”
“The one where the trunk splits in two?”
“Yup. It’s buried in the sand eight paces directly behind that tree. It’s very
shallow, so you can use your hand if you need to. Let’s have some lunch
and get some rest. I’m going to need it for the mission tonight. Remember,
someone has to be on guard at all times.”
“In case of zombies?” asks Nathan.
“And in case of those guys over there,” replies Tony. “They know we
have food and guns. I mean, really, they went to get booze. They didn’t even
think about getting anything that could help them survive.”
“But they did find out about Rudy and Howard,” Becky points out.
“True,” says Tony. “And hopefully by the time the sun goes down Rudy
and Howard will be safe and sound right here with us.”

Chapter Five - The Rescue Plan
Day 3
Tony wakes up before the sun creeps over the horizon. He’s on a mission.
Get most of the food, guns, and ammo hidden before everyone else wakes.
As he’s making his last trip to the wood line with the supplies Nate stops
him. “What are you doing, Tony?”
“Hiding most of our supplies. You don’t want Brian and them knowing
we have all this. He’s the type who doesn’t understand the meaning of
conservation. I hid about six months’ worth of dehydrated food.”
“What about the guns and ammo?”
“So, we have our 9mm pistols and there’s 2 SKS rifles and a bolt action
Nagant in my tent with about 600 rounds. I hid the other two hand guns, the
shotgun, the two AR15s, and 3 Nagants with the rest of the ammo. I also hid
about a month’s worth of food for three people on the boat.”
“Do you really think Brian would cause trouble if he knew what we had?”
“Okay, Nate. You tell him about the food on the boat and see what
happens. People change, and usually for the worse, when the world goes to
shit. From what we’ve seen so far, it’s looking like the world has more than
gone to shit.”
“You’re right.”
As the sun comes up the world seems unchanged from Little Tybee
Island. The birds are singing, the sound of the surf is a constant drum, and
there’s a refreshing breeze out of the south east. “What’s the plan then,
guys?” asks Becky when she wakes up and joins the boys.
“I want to go over to Jay’s camp and talk to them about what happened
yesterday. What they were saying last night when we got back made little
sense to me,” Nate says.
“Yeah, for sure. I’m sure they were shocked to find out that we were
telling them the truth,” Tony replies.
They make their way over to where Brian, Jay, and Carrie are camping.
As they approach the others’ camp, the conversation they hear sounds
intense and serious. “I’m telling you man! They’re in there and we’ve got to
get them out!” they hear Jay saying.
“Oh, and how do you propose we do that with those damned geeks
gathered around the Wind Rose, huh?” Brian replies.
“Wait, what are you guys talking about?” interrupts Tony.
“Jay seems to think we can get Howard and Rudy out of the Wind Rose,
which is surrounded by those geeks.”
“So how do you know they’re in there?” Tony asks.
“When we went over to Tybee yesterday and saw what you guys saw, we
decided to go to the Wind Rose and get some supplies.”
“You mean booze?” Becky interrupts.
“Yeah, what the hell did you think I meant! Anyway, we make it to the
front door and as I’m looking in the window I see Howard and Rudy pointing
vigorously towards Doc’s. We turned and looked and a million geeks are
running right for us!”
“It wasn’t a million. More like a hundred or so,” says Carrie.
