Dear Friends,
November ushers in the season of
holidays: Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving,
Bodhi Day, Pancha Ganapti, Hanukkah,
Kwanzaa, Posadas Navidenas, Mawlid el-
Nabi, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. The 11th
month also signals the launch of the SFSC
Cultural Arts Season with novel exhibits at the
Museum of Florida Art and Culture (MOFAC)
and delightful performances at the 1,460-seat Alan Jay Wildstein
Center for the Performing Arts and the 250-seat SFSC University
Center.
The word “holiday” is derived from the Old English halig
“holy” + dæg “day” meaning both “religious festival” and
“day of recreation.” Visiting MOFAC or attending one of our 39
performances certainly is an enjoyment or pleasant recreational
activity, but is it religious?
I’ve heard that hockey is a religion in Canada, tea time is a
religion in Great Britain, and high school football is a religion in
Texas. So, I’d like to think that SFSC Performing Arts is a religion
to arts lovers like you. Both religion and the performing and
visual arts elevate our thinking, refresh our souls, and satisfy our
emotional and spiritual self. I hope you feel inspired and joyous
after one of our performances and feel comfortable bringing your
friends and family to our hallowed venue.
As the holiday season approaches, our thoughts turn to good
folks like you who have made our progress possible. It is in this
spirit that the Cultural Programs Team (Lorrie, Chase, Mitzi, Megan,
Gil, John, Janet, Glenn, Nathan, and myself) say “Thank you and
best wishes. May your ‘holy days’ be merry and bright.”
Warm holiday wishes to you and yours,
M.F.A.
Cindy Garren,
Director, SFSC Cultural Arts Programs
P.S. If you’re looking for a fine holiday gift,
tickets to a show are always appreciated!
