“When Offi cer Ribbing was recently interviewed on one of
the local news stations and I saw what the junior high was
doing with collecting the tabs I thought ‘Oh my gosh, it’s a
community connection,’” said Richardson. “We had already fi nished
reading the book, but we revisited
that because I told the students, ‘The
more we can connect what we
learn in the classroom to out in our community, the more real
it is and the more fun it is.’”
After the students reconnected with the book, it inspired
them to help.
“We really struggled not to show emotion,” Richardson said.
“Some of us did show emotion, but the things that
the students learned about life and how fragile
life is and the complications that families go
through with illnesses was incredible.”
