her contributions. Speaking out for what
you believe in is what all lawyers and
paralegals should do. Heather is a proud
example of what a strong woman and a
strong paralegal should strive to be.”
Winston & Strawn—an international
law firm with offices throughout North
America, Europe, and Asia—also
made a charitable contribution to
the foundation. Julie Goodman, chief
corporate social responsibility officer,
said the firm felt a strong connection
to Heyer because she worked as a
paralegal, and paralegals play an
integral role at the firm.
“As we considered the appropriate
recipient for a grant, we looked at
various options, including a donation
to the family,” Goodman said. “But
the family raised so much money
so quickly that they stopped taking
donations. When we later learned
about the Heather Heyer Foundation
and its focus on scholarships for those
interested in legal and paralegal careers,
we were very pleased to contribute.”
“As a firm, we are deeply committed
to a culture of acceptance, diversity,
and public service,” Goodman
added. “We were horrified about the
events in Charlottesville, and about
the tragic death of Heather Heyer. Like
us, Heather worked in a law firm and
believed in the power of law to help
make a difference in people’s lives.”
