The vaqueros and expert western horsemen (and women), value the time it takes to create a superb finished “bridle horse”. A bridle horse means to have a horse developed to the point that he or she may be ridden one-handed in a leverage curb, or spade bit. Horses trained in this discipline are not to be used with heavy hands. Their mouths are respected and protected. The sensitivity of the bridle horse is a pure bliss. Their training was measured not in hours or days, but in years. Traditional Classical Dressage, being born of cavalry maneuvers, is a discipline that emphasizes harmony between horse and rider. It is the development of a mutually respectful, harmonious relationship between horse and rider. A classical dressage rider focuses on the horse’s abilities rather than on its inabilities. Horse and rider work to enable the horse to perform at his/her optimal level. Riders have been training their western horses with similar methods for years. Even if they didn’t call it dressage, the same approach and training pyramid was being used in creating a solid foundation of cadence and suppleness, leading to the ideal elements of collection and self-carriage. You may even be surprised to learn that the classical dressage seat, or position on a horse, is almost identical to the traditional Western seat. 48 www.EliteEquestrian.us These methods now help all horses to relax and take pleasure in their work all the while becoming athletic, soft, supple, and naturally collected. Although top western horsemen and women have used classical dressage techniques for many years, there hadn’t yet been an organized effort to recognize this approach as a discipline. Western dressage is not taking traditional dressage horses and making them western horses. Rather it’s to assist the entire equestrian community and help all breeds of horses and types of riders to be better at whatever discipline they may be participating in. Another benefit is there is no need for expensive show clothes or tack! The focus is on the harmony between horse and rider and not the flash of bling. I think though as popularity soars, the bling will enter the ring at some point. But that’s just my opinion. The fusion of both the Dressage and the Western riding worlds creating Western Dressage is often met with much discrepancy in the feelings it evokes from riders of each discipline.
