Some however, feel the word “dressage” shouldn’t be associated with the word “western” at all. Dressage is a tool to improve our relationship with our horse, to teach him to be obedient, to develop the musculature to carry us in a more beneficial and comfortable way, and to give him a foundation for any task that we ask him/ her to perform no matter what tack we choose to ride in. Classical Riding in any discipline works because it has stood the test of time. It works without fear or force. It’s working with, never against, the horse. It’s opening the lines of communication between horse and rider. It’s all about excellent horsemanship and elevating and refining your riding abilities. European methods beautifully mixed with the spirit of the West. If you’re interested in learning more about western dressage, joining the WDAA is a good first step. Their website has information on training, events, tests, rules and more. Affiliate WDAA groups have been created nationwide and are expanding rapidly. Canada has an international alliance with the WDAA, and several other countries have shown interest, including England, Norway, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Poland, France and Italy.
