With so many ways to make them, just use your imagination and get creative. Maybe your parents will use them as centerpieces for the Thanksgiving dinner table or as decorations on the mantle. They are super cute! I made a few options with photos included below. GATHER SUPPLIES: • Pine cones, both large and small • Felt for making the beak • Googly eyes, large and small • Pom Pom, optional for use behind googly eyes • Craft feathers or construction paper cut outs (Or better yet, take a walk and find some real feathers with your parents.) • Pipe cleaners for making feet. • Hot glue gun and glue LET’S GET STARTED: Glue the googly eyes onto the pom poms; let dry. Cut out some beaks of all sizes for your turkeys. Twist the pipe cleaners into feet for the turkeys. Choose a pine cone to decorate. Now it’s time to get creative. You can either lay the pine cone on its side or keep it standing up. Glue on the eyes, the beak, the feet, and then decorate with lots of feathers at the sides and base of the pine cone. Have fun! In 1896, James W. Tufts built this cottage during the early days of Pinehurst. Originally named “The Nest” with 4 rooms, the cottage was enlarged and renamed “The Crown” in 1901. In 1902, the cottage was once again given a new name “The Oaks.” Mr. James W. Tufts owned the house until 1907, when he sold it to Mr. Frederick Bruce of NYC. Mr. Bruce made further improvements on the cottage, while his sister Miss Mary Bruce along with landscape designer Warren Manning grew a beautiful garden. When “The Oaks” celebrated its 100th birthday, it received the gift of a complete remodel from siding, doors, and windows, to the kitchen, baths, floors, and trim. Over the years, the Oaks has hosted many owners along with much love and attention. Go see it on 60 Magnolia Drive, Village of Pinehurst. No. 124 The Pinehurst Gazette, Inc. p.39
