M W Community Kids in Action! The Bookworm Reviews by Benjamin Sykes All About Summer Kelly Congratulations for making an appearance on Chopped Junior! Do you have any advice for others following their dreams? Don’t psych yourself out. Don’t question yourself non-stop. Don’t fall into the trap of saying, “I can’t do that.” You just have to try because you never know until you try. The worst that can happen is you fall, and then you have to get back up and try again. If it doesn’t work out, then try it again and again until you can do it perfectly. Age: 12 Hometown: Southern Pines. School: I am a homeschool student at Calvary Academy, since the second grade. I like being homeschooled because you don’t have to get up really early. Favorite subject: Science Grade: Eighth Favorite hobby: Skateboarding. I love it, because I feel free when I skateboard. Favorite restaurant: My favorite is Curt’s Cucina. I love their Fettuccine Alfredo and salad with vinaigrette. Favorite kind of type of food: Definitely fresh. I’d like to have a big farm where I grow all of the fresh produce for my restaurants when I’m older. A farm to table kind of place. Favorite meal: Lasagna. Favorite holiday: Christmas. Special family tradition at Christmas: We get all of our family together and open our presents Christmas Eve instead of in the morning because we’re not morning people. We also enjoy a nice meal together. What about growing up in Southern Pines? I love the little coffee shops, local stores, and restaurants. Southern Pines is definitely very photogenic! Favorite local activity that your family enjoys: We love boating on Lake Tillery and Jordan Lake, and we enjoy eating at the local restaurants. To read Summer's story, see p. 36. For her signature recipe, see p. 35. Monster Needs A Costume by Paul Czajak features a Monster who needs a costume for Halloween. As Monster tries out all kinds of ideas with his friend the boy, Monster decides to be a cowboy, then a dancer, then ninja, etc. From all of his crazy notions, Monster accumulates the perfect outfit. The little boy enjoys Halloween as a pirate, and the Monster? You’ll just have to read the book to find out. The Day Roy Reigels Ran the Wrong Way by Dan Gutman is a great book based on a true story. When the center for the California Golden Bears runs the wrong way, he lost the 1929 Rose Bowl football game for his team. It was a beautiful California day when one of the most famous plays in football became recorded in the history books. Remember this read as you enjoy Friday Night Football. A Christmas Tree for Pye by Oliver Durer tells of a little girl named Pye who lives with her Daddy in a cabin surrounded by trees and snow. Pye keeps the house while her big, strong, gruff Dad continues his work as a lumberjack. As Pye’s quest for getting a Christmas tree grows stronger, she realizes that she must soften her father’s heart. Having collected natural trimmings for her tree over time, all Pye needs is a tree.
