University Chronicles 20 FALL 16 Spirit Magazine Motivated by the water crisis in Flint, MI, the Gainesville (FL) Education Center community worked together to collect and ship bottled water to the residents of that northern city (left). “None of this could have been possible without the inspiration of one student and the generosity of so many individuals and organizations,” said Bif Sheffi eld, assistant director of the center. “This was truly an exceptional example of Saint Leo University’s core values.” Saint Leo’s Black Box Theatre made its debut in Spring 2016. The performance space was created on the ground fl oor of Benedictine Hall, which was formerly the home of Holy Name Monastery. The inaugural performance was A Murder Is Announced, based on the mystery by the popular English crime novelist Agatha Christie. In April, a new statue was dedicated at University Campus outside the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The artwork was made possible by a generous gift from trustee emeritus Hjalma Johnson and his wife, Laura. It honors Father Marion Bowman, OSB, former president of Saint Leo College and its predecessor institution, Saint Leo College Preparatory School, and former Abbot of Saint Leo Abbey. The bronze statue depicts Father Marion as he is best remembered by Saint Leo students with a coach’s whistle in one hand and the abbot’s pectoral cross over his heart, representing his two great loves—his passion for athletics and his strong, unwavering faith. Thanks to the generosity of Saint Leo employees in the Center for Online Learning, elementary students (above) at St. Peter Claver Catholic School in Tampa, FL, gained 278 books, which were added to their classroom libraries—227 of them new and 51 gently read. They received every book on their supplied wish list.  The Criminal Justice Speaker Showcase, hosted by the Adult Education Center in April, featured fi ve female law enforcement professionals who discussed their careers and what it took to break the glass ceiling. The speakers included: Chief Melanie Bevan ’97 (above), Bradenton (FL) Police Department; Major Stacey Jenkins ’13, Pasco County (FL) Sheriff ’s Offi ce; Regina "Gina" Lombardo, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Dr. Christine Sereni-Massinger, former Pennsylvania judge and associate dean of the School of Education and Social Services; and Chief of Forensic Science Donna Wallace, Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
