The walk through the dunes is quite enough to calm my nerves but add in the search or small raccoon just adds to the distraction of my everyday worries. Alone in this wonderful sandbar takes my mind on a vacation from reality. Walking along that sandy path, I feel the calmness all around me. I’m always surprised by the scarcity of wildlife. I know they are out there but very rarely do I see anything move! I live a block from the beach on LBI and often see bunnies. I have seen seals, dolphins, pelicans, possums and once I even saw a wild mink. LBI has foxes but I’ve only seen one and it was quite a distance away. Every now and then, I like to pack my camera and head for Island Beach to photograph. I park the car and follow the path. I don’t see a bird in the tree. There are no squirrels, chipmunks, snakes or any other creatures scurrying about. There is nothing in any direction. I walk for hours with nothing but the in the wooded dunes yet there is no sign of life. It is creepy. You’d think there would be something crawling by. Where is everyone? me to throw in the towel. I gave up. As I slowly drove off, I spotted her. A little fox trotting down the street! Of course I had bagged up my camera and thought for sure I’d miss my shot, but the fox just sat and waited for me. Posing for me. Of course she was thinking that I might feed her, but I know better. It is not a good idea to ever feed wild animals. There is plenty of food available for them to catch on their own. I fumbled with my long lens and knelt down to get my shot. She stayed for a long time watching me. Then she gave up and headed for the woods leaving me a lovely memory. -Lisa Jim George’s Electric Fully Insured Free Estimates Bonded Residential/Commercial Jim 732-841-1920 John 908-896-5672 SERVING THE ISLAND & TOMS RIVER
