Registered Historic Districts The City of Gaffney includes three areas which are designated by the National Park Service as worthy of preservation due to their significance to the history of the community, state, or nation. Each of these districts is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Limestone Springs Historic District Properties in this district reflect the history of the city during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Gaffney was a popular resort, center of lime production, and center for women’s education. Ten buildings and one site associated with Limestone College and the Limestone Springs Community are included. The architecture is classically inspired and diverse in style. Historic Residential District This eighteen block area contains 111 properties. Most are sited on large urban lots and oriented toward wide, tree-lined streets. Houses are generally of frame or brick construction reflecting formal architectural styles and traditional vernacular forms. Many were the homes of the textile mill executives, merchants, and professionals who lived in Gaffney during its boom at the turn of the century. Commercial Historic District Built between 1900 and 1930, the buildings in this three-block area retain their historical character. They are primarily commercial buildings in interpretations of Italianate, Romanesque Revival, Renaissance Revival, Art Deco, and Neo-Classical Styles of the turn of the century. Excellent detailing and craftsmanship are obvious in these one to four story structures. Get into Gaffney Main Street Gaffney is a place where the past is honored, the present is engaging and the future is inviting. As such, Gaffney recently became a member of the Main Street South Carolina (MSSC) program, an initiative of the Municipal Association of South Carolina. MSSC is accredited by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. MSSC supports the efforts of participating communities in creating vibrant centers of commerce and community. The Get into Gaffney Main Street program focuses on revitalizing commerce and preserving the local heritage of Gaffney’s historic downtown.
