Chapter 9- Search and Light Salvage Search and Light Salvage 227 P1 = (15m X 1atm/10 m) + 1 atm = 2.5 atm P2 = 1 atm V1 = 33.7 L V2 = X X = 84.3 liters of air at the surface SUMMARY The capability to search for objects underwater and bring them to the surface is a valuable skill for recreational divers. However, possession of the basic knowledge and simple skills presented in this chapter does not qualify an individual to search for bodies, crime evidence, or sunken treasure. Furthermore, the techniques described for lifting objects to the surface should be used with great caution and only upon completion of training in search and recovery techniques from a qualified instructor. Search and salvage is a specialty area. You are only introduced to the activity in this NAUI Master Scuba Diver course. Search activities requiring further training in a specialty course on the subject include special zig-zag patterns employing lines, special techniques for searching in swift-flowing rivers and around marina docks, and the proper use of a diver’s sled. Salvage training includes the use of larger lift bags and drums, the use of winches and block and tackle devices, and detailed calculations pertinent to salvage operations. If you have a need to be involved in search and salvage or an interest in this activity, learn what you need to know by completing the NAUI Search and Recovery specialty course.
