NAUI Master Scuba Diver CHAPTER 10 Diving Techniques and Deeper Diving This chapter is intended to review diving techniques 228 Diving Techniques and Deeper Diving involving communications, equipment modifications, and buoyancy control. It will also introduce some of the aspects of deeper diving. Deep diving, as defined for this NAUI Master Scuba Diver course, is any diving that occurs between 18 and 40 m (60 and 130 ft). For our purposes, dives below 40 m (130 ft) are considered beyond the scope of routine recreational diving. Since dives below 40 m (130 ft) often require decompression as well as very specialized techniques, we often refer to such activity as “technical diving.” Deep dives differ from shallower dives with respect to temperature changes, breathing resistance, reduced light, possible narcosis, additional buoyancy adjustments, and anxiety. A precautionary stop is particularly important at the end of any deep dive; this refers to a non-required decompression stop made as a safety precaution. All but the shallowest dives should incorporate such a stop.
