V Introduction Introduction Prerequisites for the NAUI Master Scuba Diver course include a minimum age of 15 and either NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver certification or equivalent training and experience. You are usually expected to provide your own equipment for the course. This includes full open water scuba gear with instrumentation, an alternate air source, and two dive lights-a primary and a backup light. To qualify for certification, you will need to attend all academic sessions, demonstrate the ability to safely participate in all open water training activities, and demonstrate understanding and retention of the material presented by scoring at least 75% on a comprehensive written examination. Responsibilities You and your instructor have responsibilities during the Master Scuba Diver course. Your instructor must determine that you have the necessary background and experience to safely participate in the activities of the course, provide an academic session plus an on-site briefing for each activity, ensure that you are properly equipped for the training dives, and oversee your diving activities. Since you are already certified to dive with a buddy, you will be responsible for your own safety and for the safety of your assigned dive buddy. It is not the responsibility of your NAUI Instructor to accompany you during the dives; although he or she must be present at the dive site, in control of the activities, and ready to lend assistance if needed. You will be instructed what to do, how to do it, and how to avoid potential hazards. It will then be your responsibility to follow the instructions given. You will learn by engaging in controlled activities at sites selected to safely introduce you to each interest area. Getting the Most From the Course To learn as much as possible and to become the best diver you can, the following actions are recommended: 1. Read and study each assigned section prior to the academic session on the subject matter. 2. Keep the learning objectives in mind as you study the chapters, then review them after completing the chapter to be sure you have acquired the knowledge. 3. As you study the chapters, keep notes on areas that are unclear to you so you can ask for clarification from the instructor during the academic sessions. 4. Become familiar with the terms identified in bold letters. When a term is presented a second time in normal text, refresh your memory of its meaning if it is unclear to you. The terms are also defined in the glossary. 5. Take a notebook to every session, including the open water dives. Take notes on all presentations. Save the notebook for future reference. It will be especially useful if you decide to pursue leadership training. 6. Log your dives in detail. We commend you on your decision to become a NAUI Master Scuba Diver. You must do more to acquire this rating than to obtain a Master Scuba Diver rating with other diver training organizations, and we agree that second best is not good enough! A NAUI Master Scuba Diver is knowledgeable, skilled, and respected. You will know more, be able to do more, and feel more comfortable and confident as a diver when you have successfully completed this program. You will have met one of the highest standards of diver education.
