Landmark 301 restaurant offers amazing food AND dancing! WORDS: Kara Chalmers PICTURES: Whitney Patton l Sombrero Mexican Restaurant in Palmetto, owned and operated for the past 11 years by David Scalisi and Mike Plechy, is a unique concept. Half Mexican restaurant, half Latin nightclub, El Sombrero is housed in a huge building at 1330 US Highway 301. On the restaurant side, it’s the food that sets the place apart from other, similar restaurants, according to Scalisi. “That’s what we hear all the time,” he said. “We have really authentic Mexican food.” There’s a full bar, offering an array of margaritas, not surprisingly. But the place is more of a family restaurant, Scalisi added. It’s open every day from 11am to 9pm. Inside, the space is colorful, with chairs and tables hand-painted in bright hues of pink, orange, yellow and green, and multicolored banners hanging from the ceiling. On the nightclub side, there’s a large dance oor, a stage, two full bars, a DJ booth, and a VIP lounge. The club is only open on weekend nights. On Saturdays, the doors open at 9pm and stay open till 2:30am, with a DJ playing Latin music, and tacos for sale on the fenced patio. Twice monthly, on Sunday nights, local Latin bands play from 9pm to closing at 2am. The club also features pool tables, including one on the patio, which also houses a third full bar. Inside, large video screens showcase bands, club patrons, or sporting events. 82
