86 Tinsworth once treated an elderly woman whose grandchildren were frightened by her smile. She shed tears of joy when she saw the nal result. “A smile is so signicant,” he says. “All kinds of surveys show that a smile is one of the top things people notice about others.” Nestled off 59th Street West in a tropical setting, the state-of-theart Tinsworth Orthodontics ofce is contemporary, comfortable and usually lled with laughter. With a seemingly bottomless repertoire of jokes, Dr. T. has a knack for making even the most anxious patients chuckle. The practice is also renowned for its friendly and professional staff, including an expert team of certied orthodontic assistants. While he’s not afraid to have fun on the job, Dr. T. strongly believes an orthodontist’s education is never complete. “Continuing education is part of professional life,” he says. “In fact, I just returned from American Association of Orthodontics with some updates on treatment options.” In 2015, Tinsworth set a 10-year-goal to expand new techniques and care options. “We introduced a new braces system in 2015, which reduces treatment time and extends intervals between appointments for up to three months.” This advancement has proven to be a great convenience for patients - and their parents - who often have to miss work and school to make appointments. “It’s rewarding to be able to bring the latest and best to our patients,” he says. “Every day we have a parent come in just dramatically impressed.” Open Wide Thanks to his boundless generosity, Dr. Tinsworth is responsible for smiles far beyond his orthodontist ofce. Over the past 30 years, he’s been involved in an array of local, regional and national organizations that help children, families and the arts. As former president and current chair of the Bradenton Kiwanis Club, Tinsworth currently serves on the boards of Take Stock in Children and the Manatee Players. He has also served as President of the American Cancer Society Manatee Chapter and been involved with the Sarasota Symphony Orchestra, United Way, American Lung Association of Manatee, Boys Club of Manatee County, American Red Cross Manatee County, Our Daily Bread, the Salvation Army - and the list goes on and on. Tinsworth is also past president and an active member of the Manatee Dental Society. In the 1990s, he led the passage of water uoridation to Manatee County and the City of Bradenton. Over the years, Dr. T. has also offered a great deal of pro bono dental work for those in need. As dental coordinator for the Remote Area Medical USA free clinic that came to Bradenton in November 2015, Tinsworth screened 600 patients in the span of just two days. Considering his lengthy civic resume, it’s no shock Tinsworth was honored with the 2016 Leadership Spirit of Manatee Award. However, Tinsworth says it took him by surprise. “It was an extreme honor to be acknowledged for my involvement in the community over the years,” he says. “It’s been a great experience
