Ed Heitman Barnegat Light’s Local Watercolor Artist “When I lived on 12th Street, I loved my neighbors…The Walnuts, Zebers, Archers, Litches, Larsons, & Saias… �������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������ 26 Summer 2013 26 Growing up on East 12th Street in Barnegat Light was special, not only because my father grew up in our house there, but because of our neighbor, Ed Heitman. He bought the Queen Ann house next to ours when I was about 10, and still lives there at the age of 93, off season of course due to not having any heat in the house. Born in 1923 and educated in Philadelphia. Ed attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts (now University ����������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������- ters in psychology with a minor in sculpture. He taught art and mechanical drawing to junior high school students in Philadelphia for 26 years when he retired in 1975. He also worked as a crew manager for stage sets at the Plays and Players Playhouse in Philadelphia where his friends there introduced him to LBI. After renting in Surf City for a few years, he later discovered Barnegat Light where he loved the wide beaches and wild foliage. He loved it so much he bought a lot on the corner of 12th & Central Ave and in 1960 with Architects Tofani & �������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� Ed was also one of the 5 founding faculty members at the LBI Foundation of Arts and Sciences in Loveladies where he taught art every summer to pre-schoolers from 1959-1975. In 1968, a large Queen Anne house on the same street (next to ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������- house in Philadelphia and always dreamed of owning a big house. It is a large 3 story house with a screened in wrap-around porch. Nestled amongst many trees and shrubs and sitting on two lots, it has a charm that sets you back in time. Combined with �������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� tours through the years. During the retired winter months, Ed volunteered for the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society which features the famous Philadelphia Flower Show every March. There he spent 16 years helping crews setup which he says was “a great experience”. He remembers tear down with so many bulbs heading for the trash, so he scooped them up and headed for the shore where he said ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������- ers coming out of every window.
