IN 1910 Before cell phones, nylon bathing suits, restaurants and mini golf, Barnegat City* was considered a special seaside resort. ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� by boat on the Connetquot from the mainland. Your choice of hotels in town were the Sunset Hotel, The Social which boasted decent rooms for �������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� carts were at both stations to escort you and your baggage to the hotels. Oh yes, don’t forget your wool bathing suit….and the knee socks to match for the ladies. Only so much exposed skin was considered ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������ tourists staying at the Oceanic. Bath houses were close to the water for an easy change into your bathing suits. The Barnegat Lighthouse was nearby. It wasn’t a tourist attraction yet, as it was still in use as a beacon for the ships sailing up and down the coast. The stately keepers cottage was not yet subject to the ravages of coastal erosion, nor was the lighthouse. Head lighthouse keeper Clarence Cramer still climbed the 217 steps at least twice daily to keep the light shining. *Barnegat City name was changed to Barnegat Light in 1948 Barnegat Light Museum Gardens
