Fishing, boating and crabbing were some things to do on your vacation. Just sitting in the rocking chairs on the hotel porches enjoying the cool ocean breezes was another way to while the time away. Perhaps you’d run into some locals to chat with. The Archer family had built cottages on 12th Street, along with the South Jersey glassworks family, the Whitneys. If you needed some necessities, you could go to Butterworth’s ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������ Meals were served only at the hotels. ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������ �������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� oyster, clams; all so abundant at this time. The schoolhouse on 5th Street was closed for the summer. Who knew what the 12 or so students did for the summer vacation. Maybe they held summer jobs at the hotels, or harvested seafood for a few extra dollars. Or were some working as lifeguards? Were there lifeguards back then? The schoolhouse is now the Barnegat Light Museum, open daily in the summer from 10am to ���������������������������������������������������������������� Historical Society, it contains so many pictures and historical artifacts to tell the story of Barnegat Light history. Friendly and informed docents welcome you to visit. We are child friendly too. Bring the kids and enjoy the surrounding gardens, lovingly maintained by the LBI Garden Club. There is so much to learn about the history of this town and Long Beach Island. Please come visit us. Private tours available off season.
