U N C CHA R LOT T E | SO P H OMO R E Y E A R 8 Moving into your First Apartment BY ENA WALKER, NEW STUDENT AND FAMILY SERVICES Moving into your first apartment is a situation many students face during college. At UNC Charlotte, we have on- and off- campus apartment options for our students, both offering quality, safe spaces to call home. Living in a standard room or suite is a great experience for many students but after my first year, I was ready for a more adult-living environment. I wanted my own room, bathroom and a kitchen. After discussing with my family, I decided to look for an apartment my sophomore year. Now, there is no correct or “better” time to get an apartment; some people start their freshman year in an off-campus apartment and some never move into one. However, many people do move into an apartment during their sophomore or junior year. There are many different options and ways to find your perfect apartment. For off-campus opportunities, the University has a website (https:// offcampushousing.uncc.edu/) where students can list their preferences and find an apartment that fits their needs. For on-campus apartment options, visit: http://housing.uncc.edu/housingoptions/ find-your-home#Apartment, where you can search through the eight UNC Charlotte residence halls that offer apartment-style rooms. Apartments can range in style, room design, number of bathrooms and many other things. Most on-campus apartments do not have individual bathrooms, but many offer individual bedrooms as well as kitchens and living rooms. You can also use your student ID to enter your building and pay for laundry in the communal facilities. Off-campus apartments differ depending on the owner, management and design. Many larger, off-campus complexes offer complimentary bus service to the University as well as a variety in housing options. Some apartments may be multiple stories. Some have individual bedroom/bathroom units, while some share communal spaces. Two fun amenities at many off-campus complexes are the pools and clubhouses, the latter of which will typically house a gym and computer lab. All the different options influence rental rates which a resident is typically signs a lease for a calendar year. There are many different housing options for UNC Charlotte students. Finding the right home helps our students stake their claim.
