7 UNC CHARLOTTE | SOPHOMORE YEAR Avoiding the Sophomore Slump BY KELSEY WILKINS, NEW STUDENT AND FAMILY SERVICES GET INVOLVED ON CAMPUS One of the best ways to avoid the sophomore slump is to get involved on campus and connect with your fellow peers. Look into different organizations that interest you. At UNC Charlotte there are more than 350 organizations on campus. They range from service organizations to video game organizations and everything in between. Everyone will be able to find a group that interests them, if not, any student can start one! TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CAMPUS SERVICES If you find yourself having difficulty in your classes, do not worry. It is normal during sophomore year and UNC Charlotte has plenty of resources for students, including individual, group and drop-in tutoring. Any student on campus can partake in any three of these tutoring services. Lots of classes also offer supplemental instruction (SI) sessions run by the teaching assistant in the classroom. Whichever resource you decide to take advantage of, just remember, the sooner the better! GET ORGANIZED Write it all down! One of the easiest way to avoid being overwhelmed your sophomore year is to keep an agenda with all of your due dates. When you get your class syllabus, go through it and make sure you know the important dates for all of your assignments. Make sure you keep track of and update the agenda as the semester progresses. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF Exercise often, eat your fruits and veggies and remember that your mental health comes first. If you aren’t taking care of your body, you’re not going to perform your best. You have to put yourself first or the sophomore slump will hit you hard.
