6 F R E S H M A N S P O T L I G H T : Welcome to College INTERVIEWEE JORDAN EASTER UNC Charlotte Freshman INTERVIEWER DANIEL WATSON New Student and Family Services Every school year around 3,000 freshmen students embark on their new journey at UNC Charlotte. Wendy’s, Freedom and time-management, oh my! Without a doubt, freshmen year is an incomparable learning experience – creating many twists and turns on the highway to commencement. Find out how freshman and Lincolnton native, Jordan Easter, revved up his engine. Easter has not yet declared his major, but is taking up the very popular engineering track. He is also a proud member of two campus organizations: Wellness Ambassadors and College Buddies. Q: HOW DID YOU END UP AT UNC CHARLOTTE? A: My older sister, Diondra, is actually a junior at UNC Charlotte; so I guess that helped nudge me in the right direction. This campus is more modern too. I was accepted at NC State and UNC Chapel Hill but those campuses were just old. UNC Charlotte is modern and I couldn’t see myself anywhere else. UNC CHARLOTTE | FRESHMAN Y EAR Q: WHAT FIRST IMPRESSION DID YOU MAKE ON UNC CHARLOTTE? A: I’ve met a lot of people through my mentors, going to big events like ‘Gender Wars’ and step shows. All of the people I surround myself with, I can call role models. Andre Saunders and Kris Sherrod are just two of the guys who’ve showed me the ropes. Q: WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WISH YOU KNEW COMING INTO YOUR FRESHMEN YEAR? A: How to prioritize my time! Sometimes I get wrapped up in things not-so-school related, but at the end of the day, school comes first. Definitely an essential skill to have. Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOURSELF A YEAR AGO? A: The biggest problem for me was checking my email because in high school I never had to do that. Now I’m in the habit of checking my email the second I wake up. It’s so important because that’s where you find out whether your classes are canceled, and whomever you need to talk to they’re most likely going to reach you through email. Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FRESHMEN YEAR IN ONE WORD? A: AXE-citing! Q: WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST FOR YOUR SOPHOMORE YEAR? A: I want to grow as an individual and get more involved on campus. I have visions of what I want this campus to look like when I graduate. When I attain those leadership roles, I can put my thoughts into action. Q: IF YOU COULD BE ANY ANIMAL WHAT WOULD YOU BE AND WHY? A: Easy. A great white shark because it’s a predator, can’t nobody mess with me!
