16 Finding a Summer Internship BY CAITLIN CAREY, NEW STUDENT AND FAMILY SERVICES At the beginning of junior year you may be wondering how to best ensure you have a job after graduation. Preparing for employment after college is not solely dependent on what parttime jobs you may have worked, extracurriculars in which you have participated or what grades you have earned. It also depends on if you have work experience in the field - or a related field - in which you hope to jumpstart your career. This is why finding and working an internship during your collegiate experience is important. Researching online is one of the key ways to find an internship. What will you do? Where will you be located? Will you get paid? Will they provide housing? Does the program expect you internship to count as college credit? Internship and related questions should be answered on the respective company or organization’s websites. You don’t have to search on your own though. The University Career Center is a wonderful resource to help you find an internship. Career Counselors can help you through the process. Summer internship application season usually starts in the fall of the previous year, are the time when UNC Charlotte hosts its Career and Internship Fair. Application and internship deadlines generally close around late February or mid-March. Be sure to review which companies and organizations you would like to apply with, as some deadlines come sooner than others and may be more competitive. Start this process early; in the long run, you may have more options and opportunities. If you have not found the right internship by late April or May, don’t be disheartened. Needs can change quickly at any company or organization, and many employers won’t start an internship search until summer is in gear. If anything, you can take a less traditional path by doing a fall or spring internship and you can take courses during the summer instead. “Preparing for employment after college is not solely dependent on what part-time jobs you may have, extracurricular activities you participate in, or your grades.“ UNC CHARLOTTE | J U N I O R YEAR
