U N C CHA R LOT T E | J U N I O R Y E A R 18 While attending a career fair or graduate school showcase, what should you prepare? How can you get the most out of the opportunity to meet with recruiters? The following tips will help guide you in preparing for and enhancing your opportunities during a career fair: BEFORE THE CAREER FAIR: Print multiple copies of your resume to give to employers. A good number is between 20 to 30 copies. Research the companies represented at the career fair and spend time getting background information on them. Asking specific questions impresses recruiters and shows you have a genuine interest in their organization. Dress to impress. Come to a career fair dressed for the job you are seeking. DURING THE CAREER FAIR: When you arrive, take a few minutes to review the map/directory for the fair. Introduce yourself and give your elevator pitch. Always extend your hand, say “hello” and give your name. Have your resume ready to give to the employer and be prepared to talk about your academic, educational and extracurricular experiences. Highlight your skills and strengths. Take notes and ask the recruiter or representative for their card. Save this information so you can contact them later. Always check with recruiters before taking materials from their tables. AFTER THE CAREER FAIR: Locate the contact information and/or notes from the career fair. Write thank-you notes to the recruiters for taking their time to talk with you about employment opportunities. Not only does this show how courteous you are, but it starts communication with a potential employer beyond the career fair. UNC Charlotte offers multiple career and graduate school fairs throughout the year. Some examples include: Education Career Fair, Summer Employment Expo, Career Carnival, Fall Career and Internship Fair, and Part-Time Job Fair.
