Rebekah was awarded the scholarship on her own merits and personal talent. Creativity grows best in a community where we learn from one another and grow together. Looking at a timeline, creativity that sparks innovation almost seems to come in waves. Nineteenth century Impressionism is defined by the works of artists such as Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, and Degas. Composers of the Romantic Era include Chopin, Wagner, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. It’s not difficult to imagine that these great artists and musicians learned from and were inspired by one another. In a culture that likes to self-promote and invoke god-like status on those with talent, Rebekah and Elmer have proven that friendship and collaboration only makes our own light shine that much brighter. A C I T Y M A P F O R V I D A L I A “After sitting through another community meeting last spring and listening to comments and complaints about the lack of parking in the downtown Vidalia area…, it occurred to me that maybe merchants, customers and especially out-of-town visitors simply were not aware of parking lots and spaces that are available,” said Vidalia City Council member, Lisa Chesser. “The first thing that came to mind was a map the city could provide to merchants and one that could be used by our Downtown Vidalia Association and our Convention and Visitors Bureau–a map that could be provided online and via social media by individuals and merchants.” The idea for a map led to the idea of reaching out to the high school art department. After contacting Tammy McFadden (Asst. Principal/CTAE Director), a meeting was arranged with art students Elmer Ivon and Rebekah Hilton, Paula Toole (Vidalia Main Street/Downtown Vidalia Association Director), Alexa Britton (CVAB Director), and Erin Banks (Visual Arts teacher). “Mrs. Banks was so accommodating and an integral part of the project as she made Rebekah and Elmer available for meetings,” said Lisa, “and kept us connected over the course of several months…. One of the most wonderful outcomes of this collaboration, besides the wonderfully creative graphic-arts map of downtown Vidalia, is the discovery of all the incredible talent in our high school. The level of talent and creativity coupled with the attitude of the students and willingness to use their gifts as well as passionate teachers to serve our community is a valuable and precious asset and resource that we are blessed to have.” Mayor Ronnie Dixon, City Manager Nick Overstreet, Paula Toole, Alexa Britton, and Lisa Chesser presented Elmer and Rebekah checks (scholarship funds) for their hours of work and service to city. Mrs. Banks was also presented with a check for the VHS Art Department for her support and involvement in the project. ��TCM
