Crain, Southern Pines. Pete and Kate, Mules Remembered by Larry Steve Crain My paternal grandfather, Carl Crain, worked two dark-colored mules named Pete and Kate. They pastured together and often pulled a 2-horse wagon. They slept in adjoining stalls in a tin-roofed barn in rural Greenville, S.C., in the early 1950s. I recall “riding” Pete when I was about three years old. “Pa” (that’s what I called my paternal grandfather) plowed with Pete one afternoon and brought him, at end of day, to drink from A Match Made in Heaven by Rebekah Sykes The church fellowship hall overflows with family, friends and lots of good food. Decorations give way to celebrations of love, laughter and of two lives well-lived as one for the past fifty years. Three sons give testimony of their parents’ lives in sharing funny stories, happy times, and lessons learned in the McClure family home that covered several countries, many military bases, and lots of adventure. As Bill and Lois McClure look back over 50 years, they remember childhood days, that first blind date, children, ministry, and a relationship that only survived by the grace of God—truly theirs is a match made in heaven. MAKE A SPLASH con't. p. 6 Dr. Michael Rowland. Once Upon a Century by Rebekah Sykes For over twenty-five years, the Agave, also called the Century Plant, has watched customers of Star Ridge Aquatics, LLC come and go. As water lilies, pitcher plants, and cacti, carefully grown and nurtured within the nursery, are chosen for new homes, the Agave has faithfully grown its roots outside the sales room. Neighboring the ponds of happy Koi and goldfish, the Agave has many friends as the waterfalls at the nursery serenade the abundance all around. Growth has been slow and steady for the once potted gallon-sized plant Joe Granato purchased from a garden center in Charleston, SC. Growing intertwined among the thick, strong arms of the evergreen Agave, stories weave in and out. There have been birthdays, graduations, weddings, and funerals all remembered within its skin as life passes through the doors of the nursery bringing news, calls, and visits. The Century Plant . A Man for All Seasons by Rebekah Sykes White letters spell “The Farm” on the dark wooden sign at the front of the driveway winding uphill through the tall trees. Sunlight spills around the shadows leading the way along the bend, around the pond with the splashing fountain, and to the house sharing a barn below. Great Danes announce my arrival and keep me in the car until I see a friendly smile wave. Humbly I must admit, the curiosity got the better of me today as I just had to see what was over that hill upon moving to the neighborhood. So many people we meet, we forget. So many conversations shared, remain forgotten.
