I must start off and say I am very honored to be the one to have interviewed, and allowed to write about July’s Bartender of the Month. This beautiful lady is as Tybee as they come. Mary “Boo” Pezan has lived on Tybee since she was 9 years old. Boo shared many stories of life back when she was a young girl, from roller skating on the pier, always afraid of falling off, to the night the pier burned down and watching it from her house. “The trees were much lower back then,” she chuckled. Boo spent her time as a child roaming the island, from sun up to sun down, north end to south end. One of her favorite spots when she was about 10 years old was Nikki’s Bar on the south end. Everyday Boo would go in and visit Mable, the bartender. Boo admired Mable, the way she captivated her regulars, kept them laughing, and constantly made people feel welcome. At age 11, Boo knew exactly what she wanted to be when she grew up. It was then Boo told Mable, “I want to be just like you. I’m going to be a bartender when I grow up!” and that she did. At 18 Boo took her first bartending job at Novelty Bar (currently Doc’s). Boo’s been bartending ever since. From Palmer Seafood, to Crow Bar, Fannies, and the Black Lace Lounge (Gentleman’s club). When asked if she ever stripped, Boo proclaimed “Hell No! Hell No! Hell No!” Awfully defensive if you ask me! Today Boo can be found at the Crab Shack where she thrives. Boo loves her regulars. “I breathe regulars, and try to make all customers regulars.” Boo corrected me and told me, “I’m not just a bartender, I’m an entertainer.” And that she certainly is. Boo is funny, warm, and straight to the point. She’s quick to make you laugh, and to pour you one of her famous Margaritas!
