29 What can they want who have Jesus: His divine personal charm, His tender sympathy and His Love? Yes, Our Lord Himself said that the Apostles did want something: a Divine Person who is Love, so especially to be worshipped by love; a Divine Lover, whose office is to sanctify and make holy; a Divine Spirit who would make them Apostles! By strengthening their faith which was so weak during the Sacred Passion, so doubtful at the Resurrection, so fearful and timid after the Ascension, He would change them entirely. He would fill them with His fiery Love and make them yearn for sacrifice and suffering, even to lay down their lives for their faith in Jesus. The Holy Spirit’s coming would complete the Apostles’ conversion. During His last discourse, Our Lord poured out the innermost thoughts, feelings and secrets which lay hidden in His Soul. He had reserved so many things for this last hour. The seal He was to place on all His previous instruction was the revelation of the Holy Ghost. Our Lord testified clearly and sublimely: The Holy Ghost is truly Divine; He is the Spirit of God; He is the Spirit of Truth and Holiness, because by proceeding from Love, He sanctifies creatures and unites them to God. That which God promised was not just a presence, but an indwelling. He would teach them all things Christ had said and be their Advocate and Helper. He would impart to them peace that would be solid, true and lasting. He would turn their sorrow into joy. In their persecutions and tribulations, the consolations of the Holy Spirit would inundate their souls, and they would be filled with the sweetness and encouragement of mutual charity. The indwelling of the Spirit, Who is the bond of love, would give their prayer its efficacy. True devotion to the Holy Ghost is the last and dearest desire of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We need the Holy Ghost to love Jesus more, to have more power against self and worldliness, more courage, zeal, faith and a far greater
