Points of Pride in the 2016-17 School Year By Kurt S. Browning Pasco County Schools is fortunate to have outstanding students and employees who exemplify model leadership and achievement. With the 2016-17 school year coming to a close, it is important to reflect on our district’s points of pride: The Florida Association of School Nurses named school nurse Margaret Polk 2017 Florida School Nurse of the Year. BestColleges.com ranked Marchman Technical College #2 on the list of Best Community Colleges in Florida for 2017. The Mitchell High School yearbook, The Stampede, won the prestigious National Scholastic Press Association Pacemaker award. Logan Beatty, a 9th grade Land O’ Lakes High School International Baccalaureate® student, was invited to The White House in October 2016 as one of President Barack Obama’s Kid Science Advisors. Land O’ Lakes High School student Nikhil Dutt won the 2016 Congressional App Challenge for Florida’s 12th Congressional District. Relief bus driver Jennifer Walker was named the Missing Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse School 2016 Bus Operator of the Year for rescuing a toddler she saw wondering along a busy road and staying with him until law enforcement arrived. Pasco County Schools was presented with the Gold Award for Farm Fresh Healthy Meals for serving locally sourced fruits and vegetables, providing nutrition-related activities on the mobile feeding buses, and expanding the Nutrition Education program to half of the summer feeding sites. Pasco County Schools was awarded the Florida Healthy School District Silver Award by the Florida Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) and the Florida Coordinated School Health Partnership (CSHP). I am thankful for these hardworking students and employees who contribute such honor and integrity to our district. It may not always be easy, but each has established goals and tackled obstacles with determination and dignity. Kurt S.
