chili to compliment that sandwich. Firehouse Subs (Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Lantana, Royal Palm Beach, West Palm Beach) I know you will think Firehouse Subs is a chain sub shop, but it still has small-town roots - a sub shop founded by the sons of former firefighters. With a combination of cold and hot subs: the hot subs are actually ‘steamed” instead of grilled or microwaved. One of my favorite subs is called the Firehouse “Hero” Sub, which includes roast beef, smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham and provolone. This sandwich is a veritable meat explosion on fresh sub bread. For something a little different try the “Engineer”; a smoked turkey breast, sautéed mushrooms and Swiss cheese hot sub. All subs come “Fully Loaded” – mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion and a dill spear on the side. A side-note here about Firehouse Subs, they are fully concerned with local area fire and law departments and work to raise money or sponsor events where fire and law enforcement are invested. Plus most stores even sell their 5 gallon pickle buckets, if you need one let them know. Ben’s Delicatessen (Boca Raton) Known as the longest running Kosher delicatessen in South Florida. This is sadly their only Florida location, but they have a few locations up in New York. Go figure! Their line of sandwiches are called “Overstuffed Sandwiches” and once you see them you will understand why. Lots of pastrami, turkey, brisket and chopped liver listed on that menu. They even carry a line of wraps should you desire less bread. Of course, you have to try one of their soups. Maybe grab a cup of old-fashioned chicken soup with a matzo ball to start. Just hinting. Plan to stop by one and have a New York sandwich experience. Summer heat calls for a sandwich and a side for lunch. Grab your keys and head out to one of the excellent sandwich shops today.
