NOTES FREE STANDING EMBROIDERY These pages show an assortment of our free standing designs. They are created in a similar fashion to appliqué. Free standing designs are not stitched on fabric - they are stitched on stabilizer, either tear-away or wash-away, so that when the design is finished they can stand on their own. 1. The first step is a placement stitch, after this step you will place your base fabric. 2. The next step is a tacking stitch to hold the appliqué in place. 3. You will now stitch the rest of the design except for the outline. The outline is always the final step. 4. Before you stitch the outline add a piece of fabric to the underside of the hoop. This is the back fabric. 5. Add another tacking stitch to hold the back fabric in place. Be sure to trim the excess fabric from the back and front of the design before the last step. 6. Stitch the outline and finish the design. That is how you create a basic free standing design. Some designs have additional steps in them to add other effects.
