SHADOW APPLIQUÉ NOTES APPLI-STATS Finishing stitch: 5-ply bean Tacking style: 2-ply Trimming style: Close as possible Fabrics that work best: Cotton To create shadow work, we use a simple technique where we stitch the design on our base fabric (this could be appliqués or stitched elements - the smaller sections are created with stitches, not appliqué). Then we add another piece of thin white cotton fabric on top. We then add stippling or quilting stitches to the background and then stitch the design element outlines using 5-ply bean stitches. The end result is a shaded coloring to the design that almost looks like the fabric was painted.
