By Alaina Loughridge - Photos by Hilary Junewicz Faux Farmer’s Market So this month, missing our intrepid food reporter, Mr. Fuzzy Mike Manitta, I was left flying solo trying to figure out what to do. Thankfully, Hilary (Junewicz) and Betsey (Jenkins) stepped in at the right time for a perfect Faux Edition of Food Spy. Let’s go to Farmer’s Market and buy our dinner for a girl’s night in!! Great idea!! Betsey collected us and off we went. To those who have been living under a sand dollar, Farmer’s Market is at the Lighthouse every Monday from 4-7pm. There are a variety of vendors that offer everything from hand made whatnots, to clothing, to food food food! We started out at Spouses Bakery & Deli where we selected a Pull Apart Pesto Bread loaf and a Tuscan Chicken Cordon Bleu Meat Pie. From there we went to Tuten’s Produce where we selected a variety of fresh off the farm veggies for a salad and a cantaloupe for dessert. We had to stop by Alake’s Georgia Pecans for additional dessert because Alake’s is awesome. Naturally, we could not pass by Davis’ Produce for salad dressings because they have the best in all of the land, as well as additional veggies for our salad. Stopping by our favorite liquor store, Dizzy Dean’s for a couple bottles of wine, we were all set and back to the house we went. Hilary donned the apron, Betsey grabbed the butcher knife and I grabbed the corkscrew. Girls’ team activated! Hilary concocted a fabulous salad with all of Tuten’s and Davis’ fresh veggies: strawberries, blackberries, yellow bell pepper, tomatoes, cucumber and leafy greens. Meanwhile, Betsey popped the meat pie in the oven, along with the Pesto bread loaf and I busied myself with looking busy opening bottles of wine and decorating the table. As we were coordinating everything on the table it was really hard not to start grabbing this or that to stuff into our faces. Everything looked so good! I will start with the Pull Apart Pesto Bread - absolutely perfection and perfect munchies for a family of 6! We put out a plate of balsamic vinaigrette and olive oil for dipping and it was delish! I have to mention here that Spouses also offered a Jalapeno Cheddar Bread, a Smoked Gouda Cheese Bread and a Smoked Asiago Cheese Bread. Next time, my bread friends… Next up was Spouses Tuscan Chicken Cordon Bleu Meat Pie and Betsey added parmesan cheese to it because that’s how we roll. It was perfectly seasoned and one pie was easily enough to split between two people if you have other grabbable foods making the rounds. The salad was heaven! When you have freshly plucked veggies, it truly does make a difference. Fresh Market has nothing on Tuten’s and Davis Produce. Dessert was exquisite too! The cantaloupe was perfectly ripened and we threw in some of Alake’s Pecans, some chocolate and some wine – we were truly happy girls! All in all, our total food cost for the three of us was under $30, with plenty of leftovers (not including the wine, of course). So the moral of this story is: Go to Farmer’s Market with your besties. Grab everything in sight. Run to Dizzy Dean’s! Go home and create something fabulous! Open some wine and giggle. Enjoy the simple things and don’t forget - Life isn’t all work and no play. 24 TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | AUG 2017
