Hundred For Heroes The Manatee County 100 Club Supports Those Who Protect And Serve WORDS: Amy Bell PICTURES: Whitney Patton Law enforcement of��cers across the nation, including those right here in Manatee County, risk their lives every day to protect their communities. When citizens run away from danger, these courageous men and women rush directly into the heart of peril—and many of them make the ultimate sacri��ce. According to the Nat i onal Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 1,512 law enforcement of��cers died in the line of duty during the past 10 years. In 2016 alone, 143 law enforcement of��cers were killed on the job. To make matter worse, there were 51,548 assaults against law enforcement of��cers in 2015, resulting in 14,453 of��cer injuries. Sadly, many of these heroic law enforcement of��cers and their families do not receive the support, praise and assistance they rightfully deserve. Fortunately, that’s not the case in Manatee County—thanks to a special local organization committed to serving those who protect and serve. The 100 Club of Manatee County was chartered in 1980 by a group of Manatee County businessmen. Their intent was to provide ��nancial aid to the dependents of Manatee County law enforcement of��cers who gave their lives in the line of duty. “The 100 Club of Manatee County is here to support, promote and assist the law enforcement community of Manatee County,” explains Leo Mills, Jr., Past President of the Manatee County 100 Club.
