learned that our east coast teammates Alex Lenhard and Erik Jokinen in the UTV class were out of the race for good after their vehicle had gotten tangled up with two bigger class 10 cars. They were shaken up but okay and it was a stark reminder that out on the course, nothing is predictable. With the buggy checking out in good working order, Matt and I departed from the remote pit off a mile a minute but it wasn’t long before I thought I heard a strange tone coming from the motor behind me. I questioned whether it to identify unique sounds. In the instant that it took to contemplate pulling over, we passed by the only spot wide enough to safely pull off the course. Moments later, nightmares became reality when the motor went completely dead in a narrow gully barely two cars wide. As we coasted to a stop, smoke began to drift into the cab from behind us which meant only one thing… GET OUT! In my years of racing, I have had my share of crashes and roll overs but never had I been desert with not a soul in sight, Matt and I were in a mad dash to undo all of the connections between us and the buggy including not just our 5-point harnesses but also our head and neck restraints, fresh air blower hoses, and radio/ intercom cables.
