ANIMAL RESCUE 9 Ad Rates and Info: 513-919-5588 ROUGH STARTS (continued from page 8) The next morning, our worst fear - fusing to eat anything, tested positive for a life-threatening intestinal virus and – because it was a weekend – he was quickly rushed to Blue Pearl. While we always closely monitor all incoming animals – especially puppies and kittens –for any signs of disease, we began watching Kaleb, Kelsie, Kiralee and Kolby like a mother hen with her chicks. We checked in on them hourly to make sure they were playing and that each pup was eating at feeding time, and – as gross as it sounds - closely examined their every bowel movement. On Sunday, we noticed Kolby didn’t seem quite as active as his more rambunctious siblings nor was he eating quite as much. When the test we administered was negative, we let out a big sigh of relief but we knew the pups weren’t out of the woods yet. They were only 10 weeks old, it was doubtful their previous owner had given them any vaccinations or even wormed them, and they had spent over 4 hours in a small crate with Kermit at Blue Pearl at the time. When we checked with Blue Pearl on Monday morning, Kermit’s condition had improved enough that we were able to transfer him to Evergreen Animal Hospital for continued care. However, our hopes that the pups would be spared were dashed. Kaleb tested positive for the same virus. Kermit, March 11, 2017 It was a very “light” positive but, because we knew how quickly his condition could deteriorate, we rushed him to St. Matthews Animal Clinic (SMAC). Later the same day, Kolby tested a “light” positive and joined his brother at SMAC. Then on Tuesday, Kelsie tested positive. Even though the fourth pup, Kiralee, tested negative, we knew it was highly unlikely that she would be spared, and both pups were admitted to Shively Animal Hospital and Clinic. For the next week, Kermit and all four pups received the best of care from the veterinarians and And, thanks to these wonderful but it came at a high cost. Even with the discounts the vet clinics so generously gave us, the cost to save Kermit, Kaleb, Kelsie, Kiralee and Kolby far exceeded our budget for veterinary care.
