Most likely to run for office: Rene Schwartz By Jim Cavan NEW HAMPSHIRE’S FAMILY RESORT Consider Rene (pronounced “Rainy”) the unofficial ambassador for this “island in the middle of the National Forest.” The longtime GM of the White Mountain Athletic Club (WMAC), he’s anywhere and everywhere talking up the restorative goodness of his hometown – at a morning round-robin at WMAC’s 18-clay-court tennis complex, as a chairlift companion running laps on the White Peaks Express, or simply when he’s making sure you’re taken care of inside at WMAC’s pool, Coyote Grill restaurant, and workout facilities. In between, he has helped power countless civic and social initiatives in the Valley he knows and loves so much. A town of a few hundred people doesn’t have an ice arena. Or a golf course. Or a huge athletic club. But we do. And that’s what makes us unique. In summer, he’s a big runner, participating in at least half a dozen races a year; in winter, he has become a dedicated devotee of skate skiing at the Nordic Center. A father of three college-age kids, he served as chair of the Waterville Valley School Board for nine years. Valley regulars aren’t the only ones likely to recognize him. In the early ’90s, Rene cohosted MacTV, a daily show focusing on Macintosh products that at one point was piped into as many as 20 million households. Get to Know Rene YEARBOOK Only @ WV The Denali Challenge tasks hikers each August to conquer five Waterville Valley summits in one weekend with a combined elevation of the highest mountain peak in North America (Denali).
