GREAT IDEAS GROW WITH SUPPORT Expanding community across the Nation The unwavering support and trust of TNP Board and Staff was integral to growing the program. Through the generosity of donors, board, and staff, TNP increased the summer 2015 budget to hire four interns at $100/week and providing them with comfortable and safe housing within walking distance of the theatre. Cole and the rest of TNP knew this level of compensation and housing would elevate the program to be one of the most competitive in the nation. As a young professional still paying off college loans, Cole possessed a clear understanding of the needs of talented interns and how to attract the best of the best, but he did not anticipate the acceleration of growth to come. Cole was feeling good in December of 2014, when he’d received 16 applications for the summer 2015 program. This was a respectable level of growth from the two interns the previous summer. The surprise came a month or two later when he received 100 applications for the program, 50 times the number of students who participated the year before. Growth continued into the 2016 and 2017 programs, which received 110 and 160 applications, respectively. Cole personally interviews each applicant and provides feedback to those not accepted on how they can increase their chances of being accepted into a theatre internship in the future. His commitment to the program is steadfast. “Our program gives students tools and teaches them that their work has woh and value.” - COLE BUTCHER STAFF RESULTS: MEET HANNAH & CATI Two of the Summer 2017 Interns Sending intelligent, skilled interns on Starbucks runs and failing to provide meaningful work is a misstep made by many organizations. TNP has worked tirelessly to invest in the needs and growth of the talented theatre students accepted into their program. While interns at TNP assist designers, technicians, and staff, they are also offered the opportunity to step into those roles themselves. This summer would be the first time many of our talented interns would earn credits for their theatre focus. Continued on page 64 >> 63
