19 New Beginnings Sarah Pappas reflects on her Career at Selby WORDS: Amy Bell MAIN PICTURE: Whitney Patton A fter serving as president of William G. and Marie Selby Foundation for nine years (2008-2017), Dr. Sarah Pappas stepped down from the position on June 1. During her tenure, the Foundation funded more than 29 ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� Charlotte and Desoto Counties. Pappas was also responsible for administering a college scholarship program that assists 40 students every year. “I was fortunate to feel that I was representing the wishes of ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� previous board meetings—some when Marie Selby was still living,” she recalls. “So, I knew what grants she funded in those early years.” ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� have pleased Bill and Marie Selby, who were devoted to our local community,” board Chair Karin Grablin said. Since 1955, the Selby Foundation has awarded more than $120 ���������������� ������ �������������� ������ �������������� ������������ �������������������� �������� �������� ������������������ college scholarships to help more than 5,000 undergraduate students. Today, the Foundation serves four different areas: Human Services, Education, the Arts and Parks, and Land Preservation. ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������ to achieve a 4-year college degree. “We also fund local colleges and technical centers with their own scholarship programs,” Pappas adds. All in all, the Selby Foundation helps nearly 700 students a year. She admits there are quite a few things she will miss about working there. “I will miss getting to know ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������ visits for grant applications, so I had a chance to meet with the executive director or board chair of many organizations.
