Pappas says one of the highlights of her career was when the Foundation installed “hearing loops” to assist hearing impaired visitors in ten different theaters and venues across Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Sometimes called an audio induction loop, a hearing loop is a special sound system for people with hearing aids. The device provides a magnetic, wireless signal that is picked ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� “Over 100 people called our office later telling us what a difference that made for people with hearing issues,” Pappas recalls. “They could now enjoy concerts, plays and speeches, and hear things much more clearly.” Pappas says she also enjoyed helping public schools with the funding of technology projects through the Education Foundation, assisting various parks and preserving land for the future and ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������ Before taking her post at Selby, Pappas was president of Manatee Community College (now known as the State College of Florida) for more than a decade. “It was the capstone to my career, which totaled over 44 years in public higher education in the state of Florida,” she says. “Working together with our Board of Trustees, the faculty, staff and administrators, we accomplished a lot.” ���������� ������ ������������ �������� �������������������������������� �������������� �������� �������������� ������ ���������� which spanned from 1997 to 2008, the college invested more than $50 million in new buildings and facility improvements, and added a third campus in Lakewood Ranch (in addition to the Bradenton and Venice locations). MCC also launched new programs in health science, information technology and teacher preparation, increased enrollment to record numbers, and grew its foundation from $8 million to an incredible $47 million.
