www.martinmarietta.com | September/October 2017 The Conveyor 7 The Portable 2 crew from the Alden District took part in a local school supply drive as children across Iowa headed back to the classroom in late summer. Known widely for its generosity toward local food pantries, the team again came through in the clutch, this time providing scores of children with the basic supplies needed for the academic year. Valued at nearly $1,000, the full list of donated items (above) is extensive. Highlights include, 60 notebooks, 56 two-pocket folders, 20 bottles of glue, 14 Iowa Hawkeye backpacks and 13 additional backpacks filled with supplies. Employees from Iowa’s Alden District participated in National Love a Tree Day earlier this year by bringing a bit of leafy beauty to a local ballpark. Joining a group of third-graders from Alden Elementary School, employees Matt Ammerman, Bruce Bonorden, Josh Brand, Zac Carpenter, Brenda Delsing, Troy Hambly, Janaan Harding, Mark Johnson and Don Maroney worked through the city’s Branching Out initiative, a community tree planting partnership. Together, the students and miners planted 21 trees across the new park, which has been completed almost entirely by local volunteers. The effort was not Martin Marietta’s first in the area. In recent years, the Alden District has made multiple monetary and material donations to the park. Midwest Division President Bill Gahan Celebrates 35 Years with Company Chairman and CEO Ward Nye (right) presented Midwest Division President Bill Gahan with a plaque in June to mark his 35th year of service with Martin Marietta. Gahan began his company career working with Iowa asphalt crews in 1982. He moved to Omaha in 1987 to serve as Nebraska Area Manager and later transferred to Topeka, Kansas, where he eventually became a vice president-general manager. In the early 2000s, Gahan served as vice president-general manager in what was then the Iowa Region. He was promoted to division president in 2006. Calling his leadership “outstanding,” Nye praised Gahan’s work. “Through wise and purposeful planning, Bill and his team have helped position Martin Marietta for years of success in the Midwest Division,” Nye said. “I am certain that his knowledge and experience will be crucial as we continue to expand across the American Heartland.” ▼ ROCKY MOUNTAIN DIVISION Metro Ready Mix Truck Shop Leadperson Randy Mills is celebrating his 40th year of “making things work” for Martin Marietta. A trained mechanic when he first joined the team at Denver’s Quivas location, Mills has spent the better part of his career keeping company trucks on the road. Part of the allure, he said, is knowing that he can follow the trucks on which he works to make sure each remains functional. In these cases, there’s “no running and hiding from it,” he said. ▼ SOUTHEAST DIVISION Plant Operator Tim Ross is celebrating his 40th year of service with Martin Marietta’s Maylene Quarry in Montevallo, Alabama. A jack-of-all-trades, Ross has operated every piece of equipment at the granite quarry, worked in quality control and served as leadperson. “With his many skills, Tim gives his all to any assignment,” said Maylene Plant Manager Randy Selman. “He always places safety first and always looks out for his teammates.” Alabama District Production Manager John Stalcup along with Maylene Quarry Foreman Mike Johnson and O’Neal Quarry Assistant Plant Manager Adam Williams recently presented a $1,500 donation to the Skilled Knowledgeable Youth program at Thompson High School in Alabaster, Alabama. “It’s a small token of what we can do for the program,” said Stalcup, later adding that the district began working with Skilled Knowledgeable Youth several years ago. The program offers local teens ample opportunities to increase their STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills. According to local reports, Stalcup spoke to the students after presenting the check, urging them to take great pride in their work. ▼
