Dog Licenses—Your Dog’s Ticket Home!
Dog licenses are required for all
dogs in Ohio aged three (3) months
or older. Licenses go on sale each
year from December 1st through
January 31st unless extended by
an individual county. Licenses are
valid through December 31st and
are recognized by every county in
Ohio. Licenses are for sale through
the county auditor and additional outposts
that they may designate such
as the dog warden, county shelter,
humane society, SPCA, and selected
vendors. After January 31st, the
license fee doubles with the addition
of a late penalty equal to the license
cost. During the year, newly acquired
dogs must be licensed immediately;
however, the penalty applies thirty
(30) days after obtaining a new dog.
Dog licenses must be displayed on
a proper collar any time that a dog
is not on the owner’s property or not
Licenses show that a dog is owned
and not a stray. Licensed dogs are
required to be held for fourteen (14)
days if impounded instead of three
(3) days for strays. Make sure you
let people know your dog is a loved
family member by purchasing their
dog license every year. It’s your dog’s
ticket home!
