Painted Glass Bottles
Collecting old glass bottles offers a continual
journey of surprises! You just never know what you’ll
find hidden under leaves, buried in the sand, thrown
out along the roadways, etc. Especially after a good
rain, the treasures of the landscape shift and reveal
new delights and bury others for following explorers
to discover. Sure you can buy some bottles, but I
challenge you to find some.
#1. Gather supplies:
• Old bottles. Keep the nice ones, the originals
that may be worth something to collectors. For the
others that are normal finds, gather them.
• Paint. Glass paint, in your favorite colors.
• Isopropyl alcohol.
• Cotton balls or tissue to prepare the glass.
• Paint brushes, sponges, stencils.
• Palette. You can make your own with a paper
plate or saucer covered in plastic wrap.
• Painters tape, optional to mask areas you don’t
want painted.
#2. Clean the glass bottles with warm, soapy
water. Rinse. Dry. Wipe down with isopropyl alcohol
to condition the glass.
#3. Plan your design and start painting your
masterpiece. Put those brushes, sponges, and
stencils to work.
#4. Clean up. Water-based paints are easy to clean
using warm, soapy water. Solvent-based paints are
more durable and need mineral spirits for clean up.
Enjoy your creation!
Note: Swirl some different colors of paint around
in a glass for a tie-dye effect. Using your favorite
colors will always make you smile!
