FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Jesuit,
The method of education developed
by the early Jesuits included
ample room for competition and
the distribution of prizes and
honors. The original plan of studies
for Jesuit schools, known as the
Ratio Studiorum, was published in
the 16th century. It guided Jesuit
schools for the next two centuries.
Its principles remain important
today. Jesuit educators through the
years have understood very well
that boys growing into manhood
need to be challenged and tested.
They need to be given responsibility
and entrusted with leadership.
One of the most important
aspects of my own Jesuit education,
going back to the age of 13, was
the formation in leadership and
the opportunities to lead that were
provided. Especially important to
me were student government, the
school newspaper, Key Club, and
baseball. These activities offered
me and my closest friends many
opportunities every year to grow in
responsibility, initiative, and a sense
of accomplishment. The awards we
won and the honors that were occasionally
showered upon us were

the result of actual achievement
and performance. When we
failed to perform well, or others
exceeded our best efforts, or activities
we organized did not turn out
the way we had hoped, we learned
to evaluate, make adjustments, and
try harder next time.
One of the great developments
at Jesuit over the past fi ve years has
been the rapid advancement of numerous
clubs and activities, always
driven by student interest and often
by student initiative. Newer clubs
incorporated to help our sophomores
and juniors discover and develop their
leadership potential so they can prepare

and the revival or strengthening of
older ones give our students dozens
of opportunities to lead their peers
and discover their true leadership
potential. This has been happening
in our athletic program for decades.
In the midst of all this,
biannual leadership retreats have been
to take the reins as seniors.
This issue of Perspectives, in
addition to providing a window
into school life as a whole, demonstrates
how Jesuit continues to form
and produce Men for Others who
are engaged in the world as leaders,
developing their God-given talents
for the future.
Thank you for all you do to
support Jesuit and keep this great
mission thriving for the greater
Tampa Bay area.
Sincerely in Christ,
