AFTER MEETING IN
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL and
becoming one of the most
successful folk rock duos to emerge from
the 80s, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers—
better known as the Indigo Girls—are still
rocking out and touring the world.
With 16 studio albums under their
belts, these LGBTQ icons have not only
continued to challenge themselves but
also their audiences with songs and
lyrics full of honestly, grit and soul. Their
catalog boasts such classics as “Closer
to Fire,” “Galileo,” “Least Complicated,”
“Power of Two,” “Ghost, “Kid Fears” and
“Shame On You,” just to name a few.
In 2006, the Indigo Girls teamed
up with singer Pink to record “Dear
Mr. President,” a song that was an
open letter criticizing then-president
George W. Bush.
The Indigo Girls have always been
a vocal duo against political and social
injustice, both in song and in the streets.
They have championed causes and held
benefi t concerts for everything from
LGBTQ rights to the environment to
abolishing the death penalty.
Three decades after the release of their
fi rst major studio album, the Indigo Girls
are strumming their guitars in Orlando and
St. Petersburg live this March.
