‘Little Free Library’ Celebrates Literacy,
8th Grader at Lawton Chiles Middle School Builds two ‘Little Free Libraries’
LAKELAND, FL – FEBRUARY 26, 2018 Little Free Libraries are a global phenomenon. The small, front yard
book exchanges number 60,000 around the world in 80 countries — from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan.
Now, a new Little Free Library at Hollis Gardens and Common Ground Park in Lakeland, FL will join the
movement to share books, bring people together and create communities of readers.
“This project was inspired by a friend whose parents lost their jobs & couldn’t afford books” says Logan
Sanchez. “I wanted my friend to be able to relax, read and get lost in a good book”
Students at LCMA/Lawton Chiles Middle Academy were tasked to think outside the box and come up with a
community service project to benefit their city & it’s citizens. Funds were raised, and one of the libraries was
dedicated to Logan’s granddaddy, Earl C. Sanchez II, because of his involvement in the project along with his
love for books.
“Our Little Free Library doesn’t just belong to us, it belongs to the whole city,” says Logan Sanchez. “It’s our
hope that this Little Free Library will bring a little more joy, a little more connection and a whole lot more books
to our community.”
The libraries are located at Hollis Gardens and Common Ground Park in Lakeland, FL. Both are perfect locations
to share a book.
The Little Free Library nonprofit organization has been honored by the Library of Congress, the National Book Foundation, and the
American Library Association, and Reader’s Digest named them one of the “50 Surprising Things We Love about America.” Each year,
nearly 10 million books are shared in Little Free Libraries. To learn more, please visit littlefreelibrary.org.
