GRANT
Due to the number of conifers that are
successfully growing at Brookgreen, we
have been recognized as a reference garden
of the American Conifer Society. Th rough
the work of horticulturist Lucy Contreas,
Brookgreen has received a grant to purchase
dwarf conifers that will be planted in the
Arboretum near Presidential Eagle by Sandy
Scott. Th is will expand the selection of
conifers in that area. Th e expansion will
also include educational signage outlining
how conifers can be successfully grown in
the Southeast.
Friends of Brookgreen Gardens Benefi t
On May 5, the Friends of Brookgreen
Gardens are holding a lively benefi t –
¡Viva Havana! Held in the Palmetto
Garden, this evening under the stars will
feature live music, dancing, libations,
light bites, and a silent auction, all in an
atmosphere reminiscent of old Havana.
Th ink tropical drinks, salsa music, and
palms swaying in the breeze. It is sure to
be a good time, and all for a good cause!
Th e Friends of Brookgreen Gardens
have been raising money for the
enhancement of Brookgreen Gardens
for more than 25 years. Th rough special
fundraising events, like ¡Viva Havana!,
the group’s philanthropy has touched
every area of the Gardens. Signifi cant
contributions have enabled many
additions and improvements, including:
the Otter exhibit, Daff odil Corridor, Welcome Center Plaza, Butterfl y exhibit,
Lowcountry ricefi elds trail, Waterfowl exhibit, Arboretum enhancement, and most
recently construction of the Bleifeld Galley, presentation of the LEGOS Exhibit,
Ribbit the Exhibit, and Patrick Dougherty’s new sculpture, In the Mix.
