Amish Countryside 3
For visitors to the Ohio Amish
Countryside in Geauga County, the
interest of a slower way of life in
today’s hurried society is intriguing.
As you travel the back roads of the
area you will invariably encounter
horse and buggies clip clopping
along, Amish walking barefoot along
the road, neat white homes, and
immaculate gardens. Some uncommon
sights that you might be lucky enough
to see are Amish youth skating on the
road, or vegetables in a wagon offered
for sale by “the honor system” with a
tin can for the money receptacle. Go
slow on the roads and you may even
free!
There are many opportunities to
learn more about the Amish lifestyle.
A stop by a house or a shop that has a
business sign out front is not only an
opportunity to purchase quality goods
or foods, but a chance to visit with an
Amish shopkeeper. The Amish women
are known for their hand-made quilts,
rugs, knitted articles and homemade
baked goods, jams and jellies. Amish
men craft wonderful furniture and
cabinetry. We have one Amish store
in town that even crafts their own
mattresses! In the summer there will
be a full array of vegetables grown
and sold by the Amish. Just pull in the
drive of these home-based businesses
and you’re sure to enjoy the laid-back
nature located there.
As you will no doubt learn, the
Amish community welcomes visitors.
Just be sure to plan around Sunday,
as most stores will be closed on
Sundays. Enjoy your visit!
