MILESTONES
Celebrating 50 Years
Fine Arts Work Center
24 Pearl Street, Provincetown 508-487-9960 www.fawc.org
In 2018, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown
celebrates 50 years of supporting emerging
artists and writers at crucial, early phases of their
careers. The Work Center’s renowned residency
program has granted 1,000 fellowships since
1968, and past fellows include writers Michael
Cunningham, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Denis Johnson,
and artists Lisa Yuskavage, Ellen Gallagher, and
Jack Pierson, among many others. Fellows have
gone on to receive virtually every major prize
awarded to writers and artists working today,
including the Turner Prize, the Prix de Rome, the
Pulitzer Prize, and the National Book Award.
The Work Center celebrates this milestone with
a year of celebratory readings, exhibitions, and
events, including the July exhibition Ai Weiwei:
Rebar and Case. A cultural figure of international
renown, Ai Weiwei‘s work is rooted in political
urgency and contemporary relevance. Rebar
and Case is a sculptural installation that draws
on the devastating 2008 earthquake in Sichuan
Province, which caused the deaths of more than
5,000 school children. FAWC is honored to present
this compelling work on the 10-year anniversary
of the Wenchuan Earthquake. Ai Weiwei:
Rebar and Case is on view July 22-August 30,
with a private preview with the artist on July 20
and a public opening on July 22.

Weiwei will also be honored for Distinguished
Achievement in the Arts at this year’s Summer
Awards Celebration on July 21 at the Pilgrim
Monument and Provincetown Museum, along
with fellow honorees Salvatore and Josephine
Del Deo (in memoriam), Fine Arts Work Center
Co-Founders; Fine Arts Work Center Trustee and
esteemed patron of the arts Alison Ferring; Fine
Arts Work Center Writing Fellow and award-winning
writer Denis Johnson (in memoriam); and
Fine Arts Work Center Fellow and distinguished
artist and educator Sam Messer.
Additional highlights include a reprisal of Robert
Pinsky’s Favorite Poem Project on August 10,
featuring readers from Provincetown’s exceptional
creative community; the Annual Art
Auction, to be held on August 18; and “The
Lyric Series,” offering a full calendar of musical
events. Throughout the summer, the Work
Center is opening nightly for public readings, artist
talks and open studios; during the day, open
enrollment workshops are offered in writing and
visuals arts.
Join the Fine Arts Work Center in celebrating
50 years of artistic community that informs
culture and inspires the mind. Creativity
thrives here.
